History

Historique

Fort Saint-Jean is a historic site in Québec where many armies have defended their territory. The Canadian Forces converted Fort Saint-Jean into an educational establishment and training centre, which became the Royal Military College in 1952, an institution providing college and university education to officer cadets.

After the College was closed in 1995, the federal government and the Conseil économique du Haut-Richelieu agreed that the latter could make use of its facilities. Corporation du Fort St-Jean then took charge of site management. In addition to training services, it has made some notable building improvements so that accommodation, restaurants and room rental, among others, are now available.

In 2000, the Corporation and the Conseil économique have signed a new 25-year agreement. Then the Department of National Defence became the Corporation’s principal tenant. It also began promoting the marketing of the site and its facilitiess.
